Rewarding Achievements

On 27th April and the 10th and 11th May 2006 Springboard Southwark held a presentation of certificates in recognition of the successes of the Entry to Employment and Childcare Apprenticeship Programmes. These presentations were hosted by our very own “Master of Ceremonies” Ivan McDougall, Springboard’s Training Manager. The honour of presenting the certificates fell to John Young CSV’s Regional Director for London.

A Life on the Ocean Wave

On 17th April 2006, a group of Entry to Employment learners set out from Liverpool Street Station on a four day residential with the Cirdan Sailing Trust.

The group traveled by train to meet up with Captain Nick and First Mate James on board the Sailing Training Vessel “Faramir”. The first day was spent familiarizing ourselves with the ship and its equipment, purchasing our food provisions and preparing to make sail. The group set sail from Ispwich on the first day for a three hour training session and on to Harwich where they would spend their first night. The next day was spent sailing to Ramsgate and they set off down the Thames Estuary and into the North Sea. The third day allowed the group to spend some time exploring Ramsgate before setting back off to Harwich. The final part of the trip involved sailing back to Ipswich and finally getting the train back to London.

During the voyage all the crew members had to put into practice the training from the first day and actively participate in ship working life. This included hoisting and maintaining the sails, steering, navigating and preparaing the meals for our shipmates. All the crew members worked really hard, building up their self-esteem, leadership qualities, communication skills and confidence of working on the ship to the point where they were able to raise and maintain sails with minimal supervision from the First Officer.

Alfie, an E2E learner on the sailing trip said, “…the trip was good fun, hard work, and an exhausting once in a lifetime opportunity”.
